THE VOID OF TARZAN

5th edition of Sinopale: International Sinop Biennial | Clusters and Crystals: Observing at Point Zero | 12. Juli bis 31. August 2014

The stories of the Sinopian Tarzan Kemal are still alive in Sinop. He died in 2004 and was until than the trigger for many experiences that in the end let him become a part of the city’s identity. Although the stories about him vary quite a lot they have some facts in common. These facts are referring to the actual encounters with him as a so called normal man who became a continuously wandering person in underpants, playing the drum, taking care of plants and animals and fighting against the slaughtering of lambs and the littering in the city.

The Sinopians gave him the name Tarzan. This act opens a wide system of references starting from the book series of Edgar Rice Burroughs through the TV-Series and movies about that person who was raised by apes in the jungle. The figure of Tarzan stands for the interface between the animal and the human. In an anthropological approach he could even stand for the first human being who was raised by hominid apes, which were the last not-yet-to-be-called-human animals.

A void is opening up: The construction of the human as a distinction from the animal isn’t a defined but rather a fluid matter. The history that distinguishes us beings so powerfully has no core. Tarzan Kemal, who never liked the fact of being called Tarzan, shows us the hole into that void in reflecting himself within the stories of the people. All of those are based on a confrontation with an otherness that has grown through each persons own definitions of nature and culture, animal and human.

In the exhibition space we see a sculpture from Tarzan Kemal’s friend Eşref Borş made for Kemal’s heritage and we hear him talking about this sculpture through the headphones. The poem for The Void of Tarzan is woven in the city’s typography and relies in that way on the actual walking ways of Tarzan Kemal in the city and at the same time on the traces he left in the history of Sinop: Built through many unique and personal encounters and manifested as a collective knowledge through sharing and combining.
